Spousal Support

A spouse is the person you have been married to, or the person you’ve been living with in a common-law relationship, which is very much like a marriage. Put differently, your spouse is your wife, husband, cohabitating partner, or same-sex partner, as the case may be.

When a couple separates or divorces, one spouse may be able to receive financial support from the other. The payments to the spouse are what are referred to as spousal support, which is also sometimes called alimony or spousal maintenance. Spousal support is separate and distinct from child support.
